Monthly Message from President O’Connor - December 2024
Closing Out the Year with Hope and Community
As we approach the end of 2024, I find myself reflecting on both the challenges we’ve faced and the triumphs we’ve celebrated. A recent article by the APA, Six Things Psychologists Are Talking About (Nov. 19, 2024), mentioned a CNN piece that struck a particular chord. It delved into cynicism—a widespread reaction to today’s global conflicts and political divisions—a feeling that likely resonates with many of us. Yet, as Stanford psychologist Dr. Jamil Zaki reminds us in his book, Hope for Cynics: The Surprising Science of Human Goodness, cynicism often does more harm than good. Instead, he calls for “hopeful skepticism” — a mindset that embraces the uncertainty of the future while believing in our ability to shape it and be activated to do good. This perspective resonates deeply with me. In my years of teaching psychology students to challenge the behavioral assumptions underlying our justice system, I always encouraged them to be skeptics, not cynics, as that is the best path toward meaningful change.
This perspective resonates as I reflect on the important work we do at PAU. Recently, I had the privilege of reviewing applications for the Christine Blasey Ford Endowed Scholarship. These students wrote powerfully of their dedication to addressing trauma and advancing public advocacy. Their work, and the efforts of so many in our community, are a testament to the power of individual action to strive toward a more equitable and just world.
I was similarly moved during the dedication of The Anika Mehta, PhD Student Success Center, which honors the memory of Dr. Mehta, a beloved PAU student whose life was tragically cut short. Dr. Mehta’s family, inspired by the sense of belonging their daughter felt at PAU, made a generous gift to give back to her community here. They recently joined us to see the space that now serves as a haven for connection, growth, and peace. As I shared with them during the ceremony, “Every student who finds solace in the meditation room, every study group that gathers to grow together, and every moment of support shared within these walls carries forward Anika’s legacy.” This center is more than a physical space; it’s a living testament to the transformative power of community and the generosity that fuels it.
During this season of giving, I’m reminded of the impact of our End of Year Annual Appeal, a campaign dedicated to supporting students through donations. Every gift, no matter the size, plays a vital role in helping our students, from scholarships to enhanced resources that enrich their educational experience.
As we close out this quarter, let us reflect on the ripple effects of our actions. Every client seen, every dollar donated, every supportive gesture — these contributions may seem small in isolation, but together they create profound and lasting impact. Let us enter the winter season with renewed hope and purpose, grounded in the belief that change starts close to home.
Wishing you all a peaceful and fulfilling end to the year.
