PAU Statement on the Verdict in the Trial of Derek Chauvin

Dear PAU Community:

Today’s guilty verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial brings up a multitude of feelings and reactions, particularly for our Black students, faculty, staff and their allies. The verdict comes with a palpable sense of relief and justice.

Police violence did not begin with the murder of George Floyd. The verdict is a small and momentous step in a long journey towards justice for the Black community and other communities of color.  

We recognize the chronic psychological and emotional impact of racism, violence, and bias being exacted against members of BIPOC communities. PAU continues its ongoing efforts to deepen and advance our social justice values and the journey to end systemic racism. In the days ahead, resources will be shared with the PAU community.

This has been an exceedingly painful period for many in our community. If you need additional support, students can reach out to the Student Affairs team for support and services. Faculty and staff support is available through the university’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
