As we begin a new academic year with equity and inclusion as our theme and further anchor our strategic plan in our Inclusive Excellence Framework, I’m reminded of how deeply these values guide our work. At PAU, equity and inclusion are not just ideals we aspire to—they are central to who we are. We define these values as respecting the dignity of each individual, fostering open discussions that honor everyone’s unique contributions, and creating an environment where diversity can thrive. Yet, a challenge in today’s workplaces and educational spaces is the belief that flexibility and a sense of belonging cannot coexist. At PAU, we strive to demonstrate that this is not the case.
We work purposely and strategically to support both in-person and remote engagement to meet the diverse needs of our employees and students. This flexibility is not just about convenience; it’s about ensuring that all voices—whether in person or online—are heard and valued. From Opening Day, when we brought our remote faculty and staff together, to the new Unified Student Orientation, which made a concerted effort to create a cohesive community for both in-person and remote students, our priority has been to foster meaningful connections. While we are always evolving, I see the intentionality behind including everyone, helping us maintain a strong sense of belonging and building community across the university.
This commitment extends to our students’ academic experiences. PAU offers a range of flexible study options, including hybrid learning models and intensive in-person experiences, such as our MA and MS residencies. These opportunities allow students, regardless of location, to engage deeply with their peers and faculty. Our in-person commencement, which brings our entire university together, underscores how much we value these connections. We recognize that creating these spaces requires more than just good intentions—it demands real investment.
At PAU, we allocate our budget and resources to create experiences that help everyone feel connected and supported, no matter where or how they work and study. Equity and inclusion are more than policies; they speak to our fundamental desire to be seen, valued, and included. As we continue to navigate an evolving landscape, we remain committed to finding approaches that work for all. I do feel this is what sets our institution apart: we don’t limit ourselves to an either-or mentality. Instead, we create opportunities where everyone—whether on campus or online—can thrive as part of something greater.
