As a Police Training Director, How Can I Choose a Department-Wide Curriculum that Can Train an Entire Police Force in Psychology?

A department-wide psychology training should provide individuals with a common framework for recognizing behavioral concerns, communicating effectively, making decisions within their authority, and seeking appropriate support. Behavioral health competency means applying psychological knowledge to an assigned police role. It does not mean asking every officer to diagnose a mental disorder or provide treatment.

Consider two ordinary training needs. During a welfare check, a patrol officer may need to recognize possible distress, slow the interaction when safe, and follow the agency's crisis response procedure. After a fatal collision, a sergeant may need to explain available support to an officer and accurately describe the limits of confidentiality. Both situations involve behavioral health, but the required knowledge and decisions differ.

Police psychology encompasses assessment, clinical intervention, operational support, and organizational consultation. A police agency can draw on those areas without requiring every employee to take the same course or achieve the same level of expertise. The purchasing decision begins with the work the department wants personnel to perform more consistently.
