Hospital emergency departments face a significant burden in managing mental health issues. Over 5% of emergency room visits in the U.S. are for mental health, with anxiety and depression accounting for the majority of those. For many people, the emergency room has become the default point of entry into the mental health system, but the ER is generally not designed to manage long-term emotional issues. Furthermore ER staff often don’t have the bandwidth to explore a patient’s social and cultural background, which may be integral to their mental health issues.
