Press release from the Williams Institute, UCLA School of Law, on a fascinating study conducted at Palo Alto University that identifies predictors of relationship dissolution among same-sex and heterosexual couples.  PAU Professor and Director of LGBTQ Area of Emphasis, Dr. Kimberly F. Balsam is the Principal Investigator and lead author on this study.

Introducing a new bilingual stop smoking study conducted entirely online at SFStopSmoking.org (en Español: sfdejardefumar.org).

Adult smokers can use this free site via smartphones, tablets, or computers to download a stop smoking guide, access tracking tools, and receive text messages to help them quit smoking.

PAU’s doctoral candidate in clinical psychology, Maryke Harrison, was invited to present at World Health Organization.  Maryke has worked with underserved populations in South Africa, India and United States, to address HIV/AIDS, leprosy and substance abuse.

Dr. Amanda Fanniff, Associate Professor at PAU, will be co-chairing the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers (ATSA)’s Annual Research and Treatment Conference in Kansas City from October 25th to 28th, Kansas City.  Dr. Fanniff’s research primarily focuses on developmental considerations in the assessment and treatment of juvenile offenders. One of her lines of research focuses on juveniles adjudicated for sexual offenses, including the study of developmentally appropriate assessment and the identification of clinically-relevant subtypes of offenders.

This month, PAU received the 2017 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. As a recipient of the annual HEED Award — a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion — PAU will be featured, along with 79 other recipients, in the November 2017 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. 

Dr. June Klein, PAU's VP of Business Affair and CFO, was appointed as a member of the Santa Clara County’s Behavioral Health Board on July 27th, 2017.  June has served extensively in leadership positions at both local and international organizations, including the Palo Alto Family YMCA, the Gunn High School Foundation, and the Palo Alto Foundation for Education. She is also a member of Project Safety Net, a community network fostering youth well-being in Palo Alto. 

 

We are pleased to announce PAU’s 4th year Ph.D. student, Joanna Servin was recently selected as a Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) Scholar. Joanna is a first-generation college graduate from the University of California, Davis and the proud daughter of Mexican immigrants.

PAU’s Faculty Learning & Instructional Development Committee and the Director, Kristel Nazzal, Ph.D., held its First Annual Evidence-Based Teaching Conference for PAU professors, students and alumni at Arastradero campus on July 19th. Those not able to attend in person had the opportunity to participate through Zoom. There were outstanding speakers and all seven workshops were approved for CE units.
