The live professional training program on Evaluating Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) in the Forensic Context is presented by Natalie Novick Brown, PhD, Paul Connor, PhD, and Richard Adler, MD.

Since 2007, our informal team of mental health experts has worked together with other FASD experts around the country in over 150 high-stakes forensic cases involving FASD. This experience has taught us a great deal about how to effectively evaluate, diagnose, and testify about the results of our individual assessments in an orchestrated manner that tells the “whole story” about evaluees so juries can fully understand brain-based impairments that played a key role in offense conduct. With this understanding comes the awareness that FASD is a severe neurodevelopmental disorder with pervasive cognitive impairments that directly cause adaptive dysfunction, leading to adverse life course outcomes. These adverse outcomes often include criminal behavior, which may be catastrophic in certain situations. When juries learn that brain damage and cognitive impairments fully explain defendant life histories, including offense behavior, they then can make better-informed decisions about culpability.
