"Every student trained in the SGIC may go on to serve hundreds or even thousands of clients over the course of their career. By investing in our students' training, this initiative has powerful potential to address the national gap in LGBTQ+ affirming mental healthcare."

Research & Statistics

The need for affirmative mental health care continues to grow, but philanthropic investment in LGBTQ+ initiatives has declined. Programs like the SGIC Training & Program Support Fund help address this gap by preparing clinicians who will serve LGBTQ+ communities throughout their careers.

SGIC_19 percent stat

For every $100 awarded by U.S. foundations in 2023, only 20 cents specifically supported LGBTQ communities and issues in the United States. This is a decrease from 25 cents for every $100 awarded in 2022. The primary reason for this decrease in overall grants for LGBTQ communities and causes was a decrease in giving from the top 20 foundations.

Support for SGIC graduate student training, clinical services, and LGBTQ+ scholarship

Student training, clinical services, and LGBTQ+ scholarship are central to SGIC’s mission.

Through supervised clinical training, graduate students develop the knowledge and skills needed to provide culturally responsive care. At the same time, SGIC expands access to therapy services for individuals seeking affirming mental health support.

Support for this initiative helps sustain these programs and expand their reach.
