Monthly Message from President O’Connor - April 2025
As Palo Alto University (PAU) approaches its 50th anniversary, I reflect on our remarkable past and eagerly anticipate the future. PAU has evolved into a leader in behavioral and mental health education, grounded in academic excellence, innovation, and service. Our mission—Through education, research, and training, PAU prepares its students to address pressing and emerging issues that equitably meet the needs of our ever-changing human condition—has been our guiding star.
A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of interviewing former President Dr. Allen Calvin and his wife, Dorothy, about the university's evolution. Their reflections brought to life the strength of our mission and the shared vision that has propelled PAU over the decades. Their insights highlighted our collective commitment to fostering a world where understanding human behavior enhances well-being and contributes to just and inclusive communities. Looking back, PAU’s journey has been one of resilience, growth, and unwavering dedication to its purpose.
This deep sense of purpose was also present in my recent meeting with incoming President Dr. Farouk Dey, who will officially begin his tenure in July. From the moment we sat down, it was clear that he shares our passion for transforming lives through education, research, and service. His enthusiasm for the work we do is contagious, and I am excited to welcome him into our community. As we talked, I felt a renewed sense of excitement—not just for where PAU has been, but for where we are going.
Recognizing that leadership transitions are pivotal, I am committed to ensuring a thoughtful, well-organized process. Dr. Dey and I will collaborate closely during a month-long overlap to maintain continuity. Additionally, the Board of Trustees will establish a transition committee to facilitate Dr. Dey’s transition with our partners and the community, an internal team led by Melanie Morrison will structure and support a smooth and effective handoff internally, and a committee will be established to begin to prepare for the new president’s investiture ceremony. This deliberate approach reflects our dedication to creating a welcoming community for our next leader.
While change introduces new dynamics, I assure our PAU community that we embark on this transition from a position of strength. Our mission remains unwavering, and our future is filled with possibilities. Under Dr. Dey's leadership, PAU will continue to thrive, honoring our past while boldly stepping into the future. I look forward to this next chapter with confidence, knowing that our university is in capable hands and that together, we will continue to advance our mission.
